Meta has filed a lawsuit against Joy Timeline HK Ltd. the developer of an AI app called CrushAI that creates fake nude images of people. The lawsuit was filed in Hong Kong where the company is based. Meta says Joy Timeline used Facebook and Instagram to advertise the app which breaks the platform’s rules. The app uses AI to take photos and then generate nude versions without the person’s consent. This kind of content is not allowed under Meta’s policies on nudity harassment and bullying.
“This legal action underscores both the seriousness with which we take this abuse and our commitment to doing all we can to protect our community from it,” Meta said.
The lawsuit was filed after Joy Timeline repeatedly tried to get around Meta’s ad review system. Meta removed the ads many times but the company kept posting new versions. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year criticizing the platform for letting the ads appear. Research from Cornell Tech showed over 8,000 ads linked to CrushAI ran on Meta’s platforms in the first half of January. Meta says it is working with both internal experts and outside organizations to tackle the growing problem.
Meta Strengthens Tools against AI-Generated Abuse
Meta has also created new technology to spot these harmful ads even when they do not include obvious nudity. It now uses detection systems and matching tools to remove similar ads faster. Meta has also dismantled four networks of accounts behind the ads and shared its data with other tech companies. The company promises to continue fighting this issue and protect users from abusive content generated by AI apps. It says it is serious about stopping this kind of misuse on its platforms.
