Westinghouse will begin construction of 10 new nuclear reactors in the U.S. before 2030. Interim CEO Dan Sumner shared the plan with President Donald Trump at a Pittsburgh energy roundtable. The announcement came during a major summit on artificial intelligence and power held at Carnegie Mellon University. Sumner said the project could generate $75 billion for the U.S. economy. He said Pennsylvania would gain $6 billion in local impact. The AP1000 reactors are designed to power over 750,000 homes each.
“We are confident that with new tools and better oversight this time will be different,” Sumner told Trump.
Trump has made nuclear expansion a core energy priority. In May he signed four executive orders to quadruple nuclear energy by 2050. He called for 10 major reactors to be under construction by 2030. He ordered a full overhaul of Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules. The roundtable included energy and tech leaders who pledged over $90 billion for data centers and infrastructure.
Nuclear Industry Eyes Revival With Westinghouse And AI Tools
Westinghouse is working with Google to use AI in reactor construction. The company says this will make the process faster and more reliable. Westinghouse built the only two reactors completed in the U.S. in the last 30 years. Those were also AP1000s but went over budget and finished years late. The delays led to bankruptcy in 2017. The company reemerged under new ownership in 2018. It is now backed by Cameco and Brookfield.
