Music icon Smokey Robinson has filed a sweeping $500 million countersuit, accusing four former housekeepers of defamation and a coordinated attempt to destroy his reputation. This legal move follows a lawsuit the women filed earlier in May, accusing the Motown legend of repeated sexual assault at his home in Chatsworth, California.
The women, identified only as Jane Does, alleged that Robinson engaged in ongoing sexual misconduct and claimed his wife, Frances Robinson, failed to intervene. Their attorney, John Harris, delivered a strong statement during a press conference on May 6, saying, “We believe that Mr. Robinson is a serial and sick rapist, and must be stopped.” He chose not to share specific allegations publicly, citing the disturbing nature of the claims.
Smokey Robinson Legal Teams Clash Over Motives and Evidence
In response, Robinson’s attorney, Christopher Frost, questioned the timing and legitimacy of the accusations.
“Plaintiffs filed a police report only after initiating a $50 million lawsuit,” Frost said. “Now, law enforcement must investigate but we welcome that. We are confident the truth will come out.”
Robinson’s countersuit not only disputes the original claims but also accuses the women of elder abuse, emotional distress, and civil conspiracy. His legal team described the original lawsuit as an “extortionate scheme,” arguing that the women plotted to exploit the Robinsons’ generosity for financial gain.
“These individuals sought to tear down decades of goodwill and public respect that Mr. Robinson has earned,” the countersuit alleges.
In turn, the Jane Does' attorneys, Harris and Herbert Hayden, denounced the countersuit as a form of legal intimidation. “This countersuit is a malicious attempt to silence survivors and discourage others from coming forward,” they said, citing California’s anti-SLAPP laws, which are designed to protect individuals from lawsuits intended to suppress free speech and public participation.
The legal battle is still unfolding, with both sides holding firm to their claims.
