Former Mayoral Appointee Faces Backlash Over Race Comments 'White Only' On Flooded Texas Camp

Sade Perkins who once served on Houston’s Food Insecurity Board has come under fire after a video she posted to TikTok went viral. The video was recorded just hours after deadly floods swept through Camp Mystic in Texas and killed at least five girls and left eleven others missing.

Perkins referred to the camp as “white-only” and accused it of promoting racial exclusion. In the video she said the camp did not even include a token Black or Asian child and called it an all-white conservative Christian camp.

Mayor Denounces Perkins’ Remarks As Victims Still Missing

Perkins continued by suggesting that the media and public would not care if the victims were Hispanic or Black. She argued that minority families would face deportation slurs instead of sympathy if they were the ones affected. The video quickly gained traction and sparked nationwide backlash.

“In another part of her post she doubled down on her statement and described the camp as a “whites-only enclave” that intentionally excluded diversity.”

Critics have called her message hateful and cruel especially while rescue efforts are still underway.Houston Mayor John Whitmire responded on Sunday and confirmed that Perkins will not be reappointed. Her term on the board had expired in January but he said her recent comments showed a lack of empathy and judgment.

Perkins was originally appointed by former Mayor Sylvester Turner in 2023. Although she no longer holds the position her video has reignited debate over race privilege and media bias during national disasters.

Families of the missing children remain hopeful as rescue teams continue search efforts in flood-affected areas. Local officials say the tragedy has shocked the state and efforts are being made to improve early flood warnings moving forward.
