Jeffries Pressures Zohran Mamdani To Clarify Intifada Comments Amid Backlash

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries demanded on Sunday that Zohran Mamdani clarify his recent remarks defending the chant “Globalize the intifada” which has become a flashpoint in New York City’s political debate. Jeffries told ABC’s “This Week” that the phrase is unacceptable and said Mamdani must explain his refusal to condemn it. Mamdani who recently defeated Andrew Cuomo in the primary has repeatedly declined to denounce the phrase despite being asked directly in two different interviews.

He said the chant symbolizes a demand for justice for Palestinians but critics argue it promotes violence. Jeffries said the mayor of New York must be committed to protecting all citizens including the Jewish community. He also stated that antisemitism in the city must be addressed and that Mamdani will need to prove he takes that seriously.

Jeffries Refuses Endorsement While Mamdani Stands By Words

Jeffries who represents a district with a large Jewish population said voters expect strong leadership and clear values. He added that Mamdani has a responsibility to show that he can keep New Yorkers safe from hate and division. In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” Mamdani avoided condemning the chant and instead said his language would focus on universal human rights.

“Globalizing the intifada by way of example is not an acceptable phrasing.” - Jeffries

He claimed he would not use the phrase himself but also said he would not police others for using it. When pressed three times by host Kristen Welker he still refused to call the phrase wrong. Jeffries warned that Mamdani’s refusal to take a clear stance could damage his support in the city’s diverse communities. The controversy comes as Mamdani is poised to win the Democratic nomination once the primary results are finalized. The debate over his statement continues to dominate headlines and may shape the outcome of the mayoral race.
