Mayor Eric Adams Directs City Officials to Avoid Criticism of Trump and Steer Clear of Federal Immigration Enforcement

Mayor Eric Adams convened a meeting with his top commissioners and officials at the Municipal Building to issue new directives regarding interactions with the federal government. 

"He instructed them to avoid criticizing President Donald Trump and to not interfere with federal immigration enforcement activities."

Adams emphasized that he alone would handle federal relations to ensure that New York City does not lose crucial funding. 

This meeting followed weeks of confusion over guidance on how city employees should respond if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrive at city facilities, including schools and hospitals. Earlier memos had provided conflicting instructions, leading to uncertainty among staff. The mayor's latest directive aims to clarify the city's stance and prevent any actions that could jeopardize federal grants. 

Adams also advised his officials to refrain from criticizing the president or federal government on social media platforms.
