Mayor Eric Adams spoke out following the shooting of a federal officer in Manhattan. The officer was attacked late Thursday night in Riverside Park. Two men on a scooter approached him while he sat with a female companion. One man got off the scooter and pulled a gun.
The attacker fired twice and hit the officer in the face and arm. The officer returned fire and injured the suspect. He was later identified as 21-year-old Miguel Mora. Mora entered the U.S. illegally through Arizona in 2023.
Suspect Had Violent Record And Open Warrants
Police say Mora had two prior arrests for domestic violence. He had an active bench warrant in New York and was wanted for a December robbery and a January stabbing. He was also wanted in Massachusetts for a pawn shop robbery involving stolen guns.
At the time of the shooting, Mora was the subject of a federal deportation order. He is now in custody at Lincoln Hospital after undergoing surgery. The NYPD is working with federal agents to confirm his identity and locate his accomplice.
“This issue, an incident of this shooting, is a clear example of everything that's broken by our criminal justice system,” said Mayor Adams.
Customs and Border Protection officials called the officer a hero. He acted swiftly and helped stop further attacks. Adams said the city will keep using every legal tool to remove dangerous individuals from the streets. Authorities urge the public to call Crimestoppers with any leads.
