Trade War Escalation: China Slams Trump’s Tariff Moves And Sets The Stage For Pushback

China has issued a fierce warning to President Donald Trump over his plan to restore tariffs on Chinese goods by August 1. The warning was published in People’s Daily under the name “Zhong Sheng,” which represents official state views. China called the move bullying and said the U.S. is ignoring cooperation and dialogue.

The White House recently notified trade partners that delayed tariffs from April will now take effect next month. These tariffs could again exceed 100% on certain Chinese goods. China has until August 12 to strike a deal before those penalties return.

China Threatens Retaliation Beyond The U.S.

The commentary warned other nations as well. China said it will strike back at countries aligning with the U.S. to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains. Beijing pointed to Vietnam’s recent deal with Washington that reduced tariffs but also imposed 40% duties on Chinese goods passed through Vietnam.

“China firmly opposes any side striking a deal that sacrifices Chinese interests in exchange for tariff concessions,” the statement read.

China said it will respond to these moves with force if needed. The U.S. average tariff on Chinese exports now stands at 51.1%, while China’s average on U.S. goods is 32.6%. Both nations now tax nearly all goods they trade with each other.

The Trump administration said the new deadline is final. However, China argues it could reignite a harmful trade war that hurts global markets and raises costs for businesses and consumers alike.
