President Donald Trump threatened to cut California’s federal funds if transgender athletes continue competing in women’s sports. He made this statement on Truth Social and said California is allowing men to play in women’s competitions. Trump said this action violates fairness and hurts women and girls.
He also stated that federal funding will be blocked if his executive order is ignored. The issue involves AB Hernandez who is a transgender athlete from California. Hernandez won long jump and triple jump titles at a state event and is scheduled to compete in the state finals. Trump said this is not fair because Hernandez did not perform well in male categories.
Trump Plans Call with Newsom And Warns Of Direct Intervention
Trump plans to call Governor Gavin Newsom to demand changes. He said he might direct local officials to stop Hernandez from joining the finals. Newsom earlier admitted in a podcast that the policy may be unfair. Trump said he will see what Newsom decides after their call. Back in February Trump signed an executive order banning men from competing in women’s sports.
"Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to." – Trump.
He said this order must be followed to keep federal funding. The administration used the same strategy earlier this year against Maine. They launched a probe and paused $250 million in funds. Trump said he expects full cooperation from states on this issue. He warned that other states could be next if they do not change their sports rules.
